Chapter

Eighteen

“That was… awkward,” Úlf said, looking down at Amelie’s body.

Fen’s bark was feral as the wolfbot tried desperately to lurch for the Ambassador. But his violence inhibition settings were too much. It was clear he couldn’t move an inch with the intent to harm.

“What did you do to her?” Mila demanded, dropping to Amelie’s side and checking her pulse.

Alive.

“She’ll be fine,” Úlf replied. “When she wakes up, she won’t remember seeing me.”

Mila stood, fists curled and brow sharply angled. “What is all of this? How did you do it?”

“Do what?” Úlf replied, cocking his head. His voice the epitome of nonchalance, as if he hadn’t just manifested from shadow and made her friend lose consciousness.

“The refining without power,” she said, gesturing to the destroyed cable. “Step through gods-damned shadow,” she continued, pointing at the corner of the refinery. “And whatever the Hel you did to her!”

Úlf shrugged. “Talent?”

Mila’s eyes widened in pure fury. She felt that fiery rage roiling up her spine, filling her, hot coals in her veins. “Tell me the truth!”

“Easy,” Úlf replied, waving her down with both hands.

“Tell me!”

The rage was spiraling out of control. It washed through her completely, coating her nerves, her mind.

“Enough!” Úlf said, suddenly serious.

As if in response, the elerex let loose a shock like pure lightning, sucking the oxygen from Mila’s internal inferno. Sharp pain erupted through her chest, the worst she’d ever felt. It forced her to her knees as she grasped her chest, her teeth clenched so hard they might crack. It was her lungs, her muscles, her heart, all convulsing in rejection of the horrible, rampaging current.

Her vision blurred, though she could hear Fen’s bark. It was far away—too far. Miles. She could make out nothing but the wolfbot’s raw figure, leaping toward her. Though, before he could reach her, another figure appeared. Úlf, not near the refinery door, but right in front of her, appearing like a wraith from thin air.

She watched as two of his indistinct fingers, which she now realized were just a little too long to be natural, touched her forehead. Then, she fell backwards into nothingness.
